The online placement test is a searched-for service

Before searching for a course, a student usually asks: what level am I?

Contents 5

In language institutions, the page with the most search behind it is usually not the course page. It is the placement test — and in most institutions that page doesn't exist at all.

Two different searches, two different people

These two queries look similar, but they don't come from the same person:

  • english course prices
  • how do i check my english level

Whoever types the first has reached the decision stage, is comparing, and is most likely looking at four institutions at once. Whoever types the second isn't committed to anyone yet; they have a need and are searching for the name of that need.

Most institutions write only for the first group. The second — larger, and earlier — finds no institution waiting, and what they do find is usually some random test site rather than a real school.

The invisible cost of a paper test

Many institutions still run placement on paper, on site. That doesn't make the work bad; the measurement itself may be sound. But it turns the test into an internal step only.

Being internal means it has no searchable surface. The test sits in a room with no counterpart on the web, so for someone searching “placement test” the institution simply doesn't exist. A genuine service you already provide is absent from the digital side entirely.

Paper also creates a scaling problem: every session consumes a teacher's time, collating results is manual, and comparing across terms is close to impossible.

A page doing two jobs at once

What makes the online placement test interesting is that it carries two identities:

IdentityWhat it does
Web applicationMeasures, places by level, produces a report for the teacher
Search resultGets you found while your name is still unknown

One investment paying on both sides. The institution becomes visible in a search like “online placement test”, and at the same time becomes a place that measures rather than guesses.

Taking work the institution already does and giving it a searchable surface. Not inventing a new service.

What matters when it's built

What makes an exam system useful is not the number of questions but the quality of the session and the output:

  • Timed, controlled sessions — the result has to stay trustworthy even when the test is taken remotely.
  • A sectioned structure — if skills aren't measured separately, the single score tells a teacher nothing.
  • Gap reporting — not just “B1”, but which skill and which topic is weak. A teacher needs to know where to go back to.
  • Your own questions — being able to add items from your own syllabus is what makes the system yours.
  • A findable page — bury the test behind a login and you give back everything it was worth on the search side.

That last point is the one most often missed. The system gets built, works nicely, and is placed somewhere only signed-in users can reach. At that point you have a good internal tool and zero visibility.

Our part in it, stated plainly

We build the system and publish it so it can be found. That is the whole scope. Who sits the test, what gets discussed afterwards and how things proceed is the institution's call — that part is not our work.

If you want the measurement and publishing side, the websites and web applications page lists what we build. Making that page actually answer a search is the subject of SEO work.

In summary: the placement test is a capability the institution already has, with no counterpart on the digital side. Moved online it both works better and makes the institution findable.
